A Self-Sustaining Vision for Little Bay’s Children
The Little Bay Primary School’s farming initiative is a community project, led by Principal Mr. King, designed to achieve food security for its 186 students. Founded in 2018 to feed all children, not just those who could afford meals, the program faced a crisis in 2021 when COVID-19 and reduced tourism cut Ministry of Education funding to just $14 USD per day. To make the farm self-sustaining by raising and selling chickens, a fundraiser was launched with a total goal of $30,000. As of December 2022, the campaign has successfully raised $16,416, leaving a remaining $13,584 needed to complete the project.
Community, Chickens, and Continued Progress
The funds raised have already had a miraculous impact, allowing Mr. King and his team to expand the chicken farm significantly, housing over 1,100 chickens at its peak and installing vital equipment like water tanks, pumps, and heat lamps. He was also able to revive and expand the school’s garden, so students have fresh fruits and vegetables daily. The project has evolved into a passionate community effort, bringing everyone together with a common goal. This initiative has become even more critical as other funding for the school’s nutrition program has been cut. With your contributions, the farm is looking to expand further to include pigs, providing an additional source of protein for the children.
